This gem of a restaurant opened its door in February 2007 and is
situated in the art hub of Cape Town. “Chicolate” is Spanish for
chocolate, and this theme is tastefully reflected in the décor
with textured walls resembling chocolate wrappings, and a
fireplace luxuriously stuffed with chocolates! Suede chairs in
rich brown and dark wood table tops (which are not unlike blocks
of chocolate) complete the theme, and contrast perfectly with
touches of red upholstery on the window alcoves and dramatic
high-backed seating at the larger tables. |
Chicolate is fortunate to be located in a handsome 18th century
building which boasts huge wooden doors and shutters (that have
been remarkably well preserved) and impressively high ceilings.
The overall effect creates a very special intimate ambience which
is hard to duplicate in many of today’s contemporary
establishments. Chicolate attracts a diverse clientele with a good
mix of high profile businessmen, artists, and the advertising
crowd, and there is no rush to turn over the tables. Patron chef
PJ Lakay is well traveled having spent 2 years in the Far East and
3 years in Europe, where he gained exposure in working with
various top chefs. He has a passion for using raw ingredients (90
percent of which are sourced locally) and believes in complete
transparency of supply from “field to fork”. |
PJ and his team will take you on a new Afro foodie journey, and
whilst the menu will change seasonally, the signature dishes will
remain. Chicolate also offers lunch time specials which include
salad and fish options for those who prefer a lighter meal. On the
main menu, a starter speciality is definitely the Wild Mushroom
tart which has a distinctly South African flavour. Main course
signature dishes are the Duck Breast with chocolate oil (served
with sweet potato and parsnip mash) and the innovative roast Beef
Fillet with bacon shortbread and horseradish ice cream. As one
would expect, the dessert menu focuses on chocolate with Death by
Chocolate (dark chocolate and orange fondant, milk chocolate ice
cream and chocolate jelly) highly recommended. |
